What is an asset tracker SIM?

An asset tracker SIM provides the mobile data connection for compatible GPS trackers fitted to equipment, containers, generators and other physical assets. The asset type alone does not determine SIM compatibility — check the tracker's cellular technology, supported bands, removable SIM slot, lock or service requirements, and whether normal operation depends on voice or SMS.

• Standard 4G LTE compatible, with support for Australian 4G bands

All plans run on a single one-time payment for 1, 3, 5 or 8 years. Reporting frequency, update behaviour and retry traffic all affect monthly usage — if you're unsure, estimate usage first with our data usage guide before selecting an allowance.

Why long-term connectivity matters for unattended assets

An asset tracker is at its most valuable on the day something goes wrong — and that day can be years after installation. Consumer prepaid services that rely on recurring recharge cycles can lapse when recharges stop, and the tracker on your container or generator goes quietly offline. A multi-year prepaid SIM removes the recurring recharge cycle from connectivity management for the full term you choose.

Powered and battery asset trackers

Power source does not determine cellular compatibility. Hardwired machinery trackers and battery container trackers can both be standard 4G LTE — or both use low-power protocols. Network coverage in Australia

This SIM gives your tracker access to both Telstra and Optus 4G networks — Australia's two largest carriers. Network selection may vary depending on coverage and device behaviour at the asset's location. Check Telstra and Optus 4G coverage for the asset's actual operating area, particularly for regional, rural or remote sites. For locations beyond any cellular range, a satellite-based tracking solution may be required.

Important things to know before ordering

⚠️ Data-only. This SIM does not support voice calls or SMS. If your tracker requires SMS for first-time setup, use a regular SIM to configure first, then swap in the Lemon Mobile SIM for ongoing use.

⚠️ 3G is gone. Australia's 3G networks have now closed. 2G or 3G only trackers cannot be brought back online with any SIM.

⚠️ Standard 4G LTE only. This SIM supports compatible standard 4G LTE trackers. It does not support LTE-M (Cat-M1) or NB-IoT (Cat-NB1) only trackers — check the exact modem specification rather than relying on a "4G" marketing label.

⚠️ A removable physical SIM slot is required. If connectivity is embedded, manufacturer-managed or proprietary, confirm BYO physical SIM support before purchasing.

⚠️ Validity starts at the SIM's first network connection, not when you order. You can buy now and store the SIM until the tracker is installed. Plans are extendable — contact support before expiry to renew.

FAQ

Can I use this SIM in a shipping container tracker?

It may be suitable if the container tracker uses standard 4G LTE and accepts a physical SIM. Battery container trackers can be LTE-M only — check the modem specification or send us the model and we'll check it with you. For containers that travel outside Australia, an Australian SIM is not the right tool — contact us about international tracking options.

What SIM does a generator GPS tracker need?

A data-only SIM matched to the tracker's modem: standard 4G LTE trackers may be suitable for this SIM; LTE-M or NB-IoT only trackers are not. For generator trackers that remain deployed for long periods, a multi-year prepaid SIM can reduce recurring SIM recharge management.

Can an excavator GPS tracker use this SIM?

It may be suitable if the tracker fitted to the excavator — hardwired or battery — supports standard 4G LTE and takes a physical SIM. The machine type doesn't decide compatibility; the tracker hardware does.

Will it work in a battery-powered asset tracker?

Battery power itself is not the issue — the cellular technology is. Some battery asset trackers use standard 4G LTE (may be suitable) and others use LTE-M or NB-IoT (not compatible). Check the specification before ordering.

Does my tracker need SMS?

This SIM is data-only. If the tracker needs SMS once for initial configuration, set it up with a regular SIM first, then swap in this SIM for ongoing tracking. Trackers that need SMS during normal operation are not suitable.

Is there a monthly fee?

No monthly SIM fee. You pay once at purchase for the full validity period you choose. Any tracker platform or app fee from the tracker manufacturer is separate.

How long does the SIM stay active?

Your choice — 1, 3, 5 or 8 years from the SIM's first successful network connection, not from the date of purchase or shipping.
