Why a multi-year SIM suits remote data logging
Data loggers are installed at bores, tanks, weather stations and pump sites — and left to operate for years. A mobile service that needs regular monthly payments or recharges adds another maintenance task to an otherwise unattended installation.
A multi-year SIM aligns the connectivity period with the deployment. Choose the data allowance and validity period up front, install the SIM with the logger and avoid monthly SIM payments for the selected service period.
Connectivity for the logging system you already use
This is a data SIM, not a monitoring platform. If you already have a compatible data logger or telemetry modem and a cloud platform or server that receives its data, the SIM provides the mobile connection between them.
Your logger may send readings using HTTP/HTTPS, MQTT, FTP or its manufacturer's own internet-based protocol. You keep the hardware and software you already use; Lemon Mobile supplies the cellular data connection.
Will this SIM work with my data logger?
It may be suitable if your logger or telemetry modem:
- Uses standard 4G LTE, including LTE Cat 1
- Accepts a physical SIM card
- Allows the mobile data APN to be configured
- Uses mobile data to upload readings or telemetry
- Uses no more than 2GB of mobile data per month
It is not suitable if your device:
- Uses LTE-M (Cat-M1) or NB-IoT only
- Is 2G or 3G only
- Requires SMS or voice for normal operation
- Regularly requires more than 2GB of mobile data per month
Important: A product described as a “4G data logger” is not automatically compatible. Some devices use LTE-M or NB-IoT internally. Check the cellular modem specification for the exact model before ordering.

Data logger and telemetry examples
The following examples show how professional monitoring equipment can use cellular data and physical SIM connectivity. They are based on published technical documentation and are not blanket compatibility guarantees for every hardware version.
Campbell Scientific CELL220
The Campbell Scientific CELL220 is a 4G LTE Cat 1 cellular module for Australia and New Zealand. Campbell Scientific documents the CELL220 as using a Micro SIM and working with standard cellular data plans.
The CELL220 can provide cellular connectivity to Campbell Scientific data loggers including the CR300, CR310, CR6 and CR1000X.
COMET U5841G
The COMET U5841G is an LTE Cat 1 data logger with a built-in 4G modem. Australian product documentation states that the SIM card is not included and that the device has been tested with SIM cards from Australian mobile carriers.
The U5841G can send measurement data and JSON messages over its 4G data connection. Some COMET functions can also use SMS, so check which functions your deployment requires before choosing a data-only service.
Micro-Diver with Eijkelkamp GDT-S Prime
Aqualab documents the Micro-Diver groundwater logger with the Eijkelkamp GDT-S Prime 4G modem for remote water-level transmission. Its published Australian documentation specifically describes the modem using a user-supplied SIM card to transmit data over a 4G internet connection.

Common data logger applications
- Groundwater and bore monitoring
- Water level and tank monitoring
- Weather stations and rainfall telemetry
- Environmental monitoring
- Temperature, humidity and CO₂ logging
- Geotechnical and structural instrumentation
- Pore pressure, tilt and displacement monitoring
- Pump and remote equipment monitoring
- Soil and agricultural sensor monitoring
- Energy and utility metering
- Remote industrial sensors
Choosing a data tier for your logger
Data loggers that periodically upload small sensor readings can use far less mobile data than cameras and other high-bandwidth devices. Actual usage depends on the number of channels, payload size, reporting frequency, protocol overhead, connection retries, diagnostics and firmware traffic.
Choose from 100MB, 200MB, 500MB, 1GB or 2GB per month. Actual usage depends on factors such as reporting frequency, payload size, number of channels and device behaviour. If you're unsure which tier to choose, check your logger manufacturer's expected data usage or start with the closest suitable allowance for your deployment.
Telstra + Optus 4G network access
The SIM provides access to Telstra and Optus 4G networks. Network selection may vary depending on coverage and device behaviour at the installation site.
This is useful for equipment installed at rural properties, bores, pump sites, construction locations and other unattended sites where mobile coverage varies by location.
Important compatibility information
⚠️ Data only. This SIM does not provide voice calls or SMS. If your logger uses SMS only for initial configuration, configure the device first with a suitable SMS-capable SIM, save the settings and then install the Lemon Mobile SIM for ongoing data connectivity.
⚠️ Standard 4G LTE only. LTE-M (Cat-M1) and NB-IoT-only devices are not supported.
⚠️ Check older hardware. If your logger or modem is 2G or 3G only, the cellular hardware needs to be upgraded to a compatible 4G device.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use this SIM in a 4G data logger?
It may be suitable if the logger uses compatible standard 4G LTE, accepts a physical SIM and can use a configurable mobile data connection. Check the modem specification because “4G” in a product name does not establish which LTE technology the device uses.
Does LTE Cat 1 work?
LTE Cat 1 is a category of standard 4G LTE. A compatible LTE Cat 1 device with the required Australian LTE bands and a physical SIM slot may be suitable.
Do RS-485, Modbus, SDI-12 or 4–20mA affect SIM compatibility?
No. These connect sensors and instruments to the logger. SIM compatibility is determined by the cellular modem used by the logger or telemetry unit.
Can the SIM be used for MQTT, HTTP or cloud uploads?
These internet-based services use mobile data. A compatible logger can use its existing cloud platform or server over the SIM's data connection.
Does the SIM support SMS alarms?
No. This is a data-only SIM. Alerts delivered through an internet-based platform, app or email can use mobile data, while traditional SMS messages require an SMS-capable service.
Can I extend the plan later?
Yes — plans are extendable. Contact support before expiry to renew.
