4 plans for different IoT use cases
All plans run for 1 to 8 years on a single one-time payment. Choose based on your device's data needs:
| Plan | Monthly data | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 100MB | Regular reporting, light monitoring |
| Plus | 200MB | Moderate-usage devices, more frequent updates |
| Pro | 500MB | Continuous operation, frequent updates, fleet telemetry |
| Ultra | 1GB | High-reliability deployments where you don't want to monitor data usage |
Why a multi-year IoT SIM matters
Standard prepaid SIM cards from Spark, 2degrees and other major NZ providers expire after 28 to 365 days of inactivity. For IoT devices that sit deployed in the field for months or years, this creates real problems:
- Devices going offline silently when SIMs expire
- Ongoing operational cost of monthly recharges across a fleet of devices
- Risk of missing critical alerts because a SIM lapsed
- Admin overhead managing top-ups, renewals and billing for every device
A purpose-built IoT SIM eliminates all of this. One payment per device. One SIM in the field. Active for years — no recharge cycles, no billing admin, no expiry surprises across your deployment.
Deploying multiple devices?
For sensor networks, fleets and multi-asset deployments, order one SIM per device. We offer bulk-order discounts on 10 or more SIMs — contact us with your deployment size and we'll arrange volume pricing. One-time payment per SIM means no per-device monthly billing to manage across your fleet.
How it works
- Choose your data plan (Standard / Plus / Pro / Ultra) and validity (1 to 8 years)
- Insert it into your IoT device — your plan begins when the SIM first connects to the mobile network
- Manage usage and renewals via support — no app or account required
No activation calls. No ID verification. APN setting is simple — just mobile if your device needs manual entry.
Typical data usage by device type
| Device type | Typical monthly data | Recommended plan |
|---|---|---|
| Basic sensors / simple telemetry (occasional pings) | Up to 100MB | Standard |
| Regular reporting devices (every 15-60 min) | 100MB – 200MB | Standard / Plus |
| Continuous monitoring (every 1-5 min) | 200MB+ | Pro |
| Real-time / data-intensive applications | 500MB – 1GB | Pro / Ultra |
| High-reliability / no-monitoring deployment | Variable | Ultra |

Network coverage in New Zealand
This SIM gives your device access to both Spark and 2degrees 4G networks — two of New Zealand's major carriers. Connecting to two networks rather than one provides broader effective coverage than a single-carrier SIM.
Combined Spark + 2degrees coverage includes:
- All main centres — Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, Dunedin, Queenstown
- Most regional and rural New Zealand
- State Highway 1 and major transport corridors
- Both North Island and South Island
For specific coverage in your deployment area, check the Spark and 2degrees coverage maps before ordering — especially for remote sites. For very remote areas without cellular coverage, satellite connectivity is the only option.
Setup and APN configuration
Most devices work plug-and-play — insert the SIM and the device connects within 1-2 minutes.
If manual APN configuration is required:
- APN: mobile (lowercase, no spaces)
- Username: blank
- Password: blank
Refer to your device documentation for how to enter APN settings.
Important things to know before ordering
⚠️ Data-only. This SIM does not support voice calls or SMS. It is designed purely for device data connectivity.
⚠️ New Zealand's 3G networks have now been retired. Devices that only support 2G or 3G connectivity can no longer connect to New Zealand mobile networks. If your device only supports 2G or 3G, it must be upgraded to a 4G LTE compatible model before it can be used with any SIM in New Zealand. This is one of the most common causes of IoT devices failing to connect after deployment.
⚠️ Standard 4G LTE only. This SIM supports standard 4G LTE. It does not support LTE-M (Cat-M1) or NB-IoT (Cat-NB1) protocols. If your IoT device requires either of these low-power protocols, this SIM is not compatible.
⚠️ Validity begins when the SIM first connects to the mobile network. Your plan duration starts when the SIM connects to a network — not the day of purchase or shipping. This means you can buy now and store the SIM until your device is ready to deploy. Plans are extendable — contact support before expiry to renew.
IoT SIM troubleshooting
Device not connecting? Work through these in order:
- Confirm your device is 4G LTE — not 2G, 3G, LTE-M or NB-IoT only.
- Check the SIM orientation — flip and reinsert if unsure.
- Wait 1-2 minutes after inserting for first connection. Indoor or low-signal locations may take longer.
- Verify the APN is set to: mobile (lowercase, username and password blank).
- Restart the device (power cycle — off, wait 10 seconds, on).
- Test in an area with confirmed 4G coverage.

Frequently asked questions
Which devices is this IoT SIM compatible with?
It works with most 4G LTE IoT devices that support BYO SIM plans. These are devices commonly used in industrial telemetry, fleet tracking, sensor networks, smart meters and remote monitoring. It does not work with 2G/3G-only, LTE-M (Cat-M1) or NB-IoT (Cat-NB1) devices.
Will this IoT SIM work in older 3G devices?
No. New Zealand's mobile operators have retired their 3G networks. Devices that only support 3G connectivity can no longer connect to New Zealand mobile networks. Before ordering, confirm that your device supports standard 4G LTE connectivity and accepts a BYO SIM card. If your device is older or you are unsure of its capabilities, contact us with the model number — we can check compatibility for free before you order.
How long does the SIM stay active?
Your choice — 1 to 8 years from activation, depending on the plan you choose. Validity begins when the SIM first connects to the mobile network — not from the day of purchase. You can buy now and store the SIM until your device is ready to deploy.
Do I need to pay monthly?
No. You pay once at purchase. No monthly fees, no recharges, no contracts, no auto-renewals. For multi-device deployments, this means no per-device monthly billing to manage.
What APN settings does my device need?
APN: mobile (lowercase, no spaces). Username and password are blank for most devices. Most modern devices connect automatically without manual APN entry.
What happens when the validity period ends?
The SIM stops working and the device goes offline. To renew, simply place a new order for your desired plan and leave a checkout note with your SIM ID and renewal request — we'll handle the extension for you. You can also contact support directly before the expiry date.
Can I top up or extend the plan?
Yes. All plans are extendable. To extend, place a new order for your desired plan and leave a checkout note with your SIM ID, or contact us before expiry to discuss top-up options.
Can I deploy this SIM in multiple IoT devices?
One SIM works in one device at a time. For multi-device deployments (sensor networks, fleet, multi-asset tracking), order one SIM per device. Contact us for bulk-order discounts on 10 or more SIMs.
Which mobile network does this SIM use — Spark or 2degrees?
Both. This SIM has access to Spark and 2degrees 4G networks. The network selected may vary depending on coverage availability and device behaviour. In rural or remote areas where Spark has wider coverage, the SIM can use Spark; in areas where both carriers are present, network selection depends on conditions at that location.
What's the difference between a prepaid SIM and this IoT SIM?
A standard prepaid SIM is designed for phones and expires after 28-365 days without a top-up. This IoT SIM is designed for unattended deployment — no recharges, no expiry surprises, lower data plans purpose-built for connected devices.
Does this SIM work in remote or rural New Zealand?
Yes, anywhere within Spark or 2degrees 4G coverage — which together cover all main centres, most regional areas and major highways across both islands. The SIM can connect to whichever network reaches its location. For very remote areas without cellular coverage, satellite connectivity is the only option.
Do you offer technical support?
Yes. Our technical support team is available via email for setup assistance, compatibility checks and troubleshooting. Contact us before ordering if you have device-specific questions.
