What this product covers

This product includes the data SIM only. GPS tracking platform or app fees, where applicable, are charged separately by your tracker provider. "No monthly fees" refers to the SIM and its mobile data — one payment covers the full term you choose.

Why a pay-once SIM suits an OBD tracker

An OBD tracker draws its operating power from the vehicle, so there is no main tracker battery that needs routine charging. A recharge-based prepaid SIM, though, can still become the recurring task: when a recharge is missed, the service can lapse and the tracker stops reporting without warning.

A multi-year tracker SIM removes that step. One payment keeps the mobile service active for the full term — no recharge cycles, and no finding out the SIM expired on the day you need to locate the car.

And because an OBD tracker can be unplugged and moved to another vehicle in seconds, the SIM goes with it: one tracker, one SIM, whichever car it's plugged into.

Will this SIM card work with my OBD tracker?

✅ This SIM may be suitable if your OBD tracker:

  • Uses standard 4G LTE
  • Has a removable SIM slot that accepts a third-party physical SIM — Standard, Micro or Nano
  • Doesn't require SMS or voice for its essential tracking functions
  • Isn't restricted to the manufacturer's own connectivity service

❌ Not a fit if your device:

  • Is 2G or 3G only — Australia's 3G networks have now closed
  • Has a built-in or pre-installed SIM that only works with the seller's own service
  • Requires SMS or voice for its essential tracking functions — this SIM is data-only
  • Is a Bluetooth OBD-II scan tool or a tracker that locates through nearby phones — these connect through a phone, not a SIM, so they don't need one

Check your vehicle first: an OBD tracker needs a standard OBD-II port. Not every electric vehicle has one.

Documented BYO-SIM OBD trackers

Some OBD trackers sold in Australia document a bring-your-own-SIM option in their published specifications. Crucial Tracking's CT-V08, for example, documents 4G LTE, a Micro-SIM (3FF) slot and support for your own active Australian 4G SIM with data, with platform access available separately from the manufacturer — the documentation pattern that makes a retail SIM workable.

Model-by-model notes, including the CT-V08, are on the GPS Tracker SIM Compatibility List. If your model isn't listed, contact us with the brand and model before ordering — we'll check it for you for free.

Choosing a data allowance for an OBD tracker

An OBD tracker's data use depends mainly on how often it reports its position while the vehicle is moving. Faster reporting means more location updates, and more data.

As a reference point, the CT-V08's manufacturer states that on a 4-minute drive its 10-second Real-Time mode records 48 positions, compared with 3 positions on its 2-minute Power Saver mode. The same drive can use very different amounts of data depending on the mode you choose.

If your tracker reduces reporting while the ignition is off, parked time adds little to the total — check your tracker's settings. Choose the monthly allowance at checkout based on your reporting mode and driving pattern; over-buying data doesn't improve reliability. Our OBD tracker SIM guide walks through the decision step by step, and the GPS tracker data usage guide has reference estimates by reporting mode.

What's included

  • 1 × 4G LTE OBD tracker SIM card
  • 1 × SIM ejector pin
  • Triple-cut SIM (fits Standard, Micro and Nano slots — no separate adapter)
  • Setup instructions
  • Free shipping Australia-wide

How it works

  1. Choose your validity (1 to 8 years) and monthly data allowance
  2. Your SIM ships from Melbourne with free Australia-wide delivery
  3. Insert the SIM into your tracker, plug the tracker into the OBD-II port, and allow a few minutes for the first network connection

If your tracker needs manual network settings, the steps are in our device setup guide. Having trouble connecting after setup? Check three things first — the tracker is standard 4G LTE, the SIM is inserted correctly with the tracker fully seated in the port, and the vehicle is outdoors, since underground car parks can delay the first connection. Still offline? Our Why is my GPS tracker offline? guide works through the causes step by step, or contact us and we'll work through it with you.

Network coverage in Australia

This SIM gives your OBD tracker access to both Telstra and Optus 4G networks. The network used at a given location depends on network availability, coverage and device behaviour, so a car that moves between the city, regional towns and the highway isn't tied to a single carrier's footprint.

Coverage varies by location. If the vehicle spends time in regional or remote areas, check Telstra and Optus 4G coverage for those routes. Where there is no cellular service at all, a cellular SIM cannot connect — a satellite-based tracking solution may be required.

Important things to know before ordering

⚠️ Data-only. This SIM does not support voice calls or SMS. If your tracker needs SMS only for first-time setup, you may be able to configure it with a regular SMS-capable SIM first and then install the Lemon Mobile SIM — provided the tracker keeps those settings and doesn't rely on SMS or voice during normal operation. Steps are in our device setup guide.

⚠️ 3G is gone. Australia's 3G networks have now closed. If your OBD tracker is 2G or 3G only, no SIM card will bring it back online — you'll need a 4G-compatible tracker.

⚠️ Built-in and pre-installed SIMs. Some OBD trackers come with a SIM that only works with the seller's own service, or have no removable SIM slot. Check that your exact model accepts a removable third-party SIM before ordering.

⚠️ Validity starts at the SIM's first network connection, not when you order. Your plan duration begins on the date of the SIM's first successful network connection — not the date of purchase or shipping — so you can buy now and keep the SIM until the tracker is ready. Plans are extendable: contact support before expiry to renew.

FAQ

Will this SIM work in my OBD tracker?

It may work if your OBD tracker uses standard 4G LTE, has a removable SIM slot that accepts a third-party physical SIM, doesn't require SMS or voice for its essential tracking functions, and isn't restricted to the manufacturer's own connectivity service. Check the GPS Tracker SIM Compatibility List, or contact us with the brand and model before ordering.

Does this SIM include the tracking app or platform?

No. This product includes the data SIM only. GPS tracking platform or app fees, where applicable, are charged separately by your tracker provider. The SIM provides the mobile data connection your tracker uses to send its location to that platform.

Can I use this SIM in a Crucial Tracking CT-V08?

The CT-V08 appears on our GPS Tracker SIM Compatibility List as compatible by specification — its manufacturer documents a Micro-SIM (3FF) slot and support for your own active Australian 4G SIM with data. See the list for the model notes. Tracking platform access for the CT-V08 is arranged with Crucial Tracking, separately from this SIM.

Can I move the tracker and SIM to another vehicle?

If both vehicles have a standard OBD-II port, the tracker unplugs and moves across in seconds, and the SIM stays inside it — the same SIM and plan go with the tracker. On the platform side, you may need to update the vehicle assignment or profile so trips are recorded against the right vehicle; check your tracker provider's instructions.

Will an OBD tracker work in an electric vehicle?

Only if the vehicle has a standard OBD-II port. Not every electric vehicle has one, so check yours before buying an OBD tracker. If it doesn't, a hardwired or battery-powered tracker may suit instead — see our GPS Tracker SIM Card Australia.

Should I choose an OBD tracker or a hardwired tracker?

An OBD tracker plugs in without wiring and moves between vehicles easily; a hardwired tracker is installed out of sight and stays with one vehicle. The compatibility checks are similar for both: confirm standard 4G LTE, support for a removable third-party SIM, the SIM size, and any SMS, voice or manufacturer-connectivity requirements for your exact model. For a hardwired tracker, choose our GPS Tracker SIM Card Australia.

Does a Bluetooth OBD-II scanner need a SIM card?

No. A Bluetooth OBD-II scan tool connects to your phone and doesn't use a SIM. This SIM is for OBD GPS trackers that report their location over the 4G mobile network.

How much data does an OBD tracker use?

It depends on the reporting interval while driving, how many hours the vehicle is on the road, and whether the tracker keeps reporting while parked. A faster reporting mode records more positions on the same trip — the CT-V08's manufacturer gives 48 positions on a 4-minute drive in 10-second mode, against 3 in 2-minute mode. See our OBD tracker SIM guide and GPS tracker data usage guide for how to size it.

Is there a monthly fee for the SIM?

No. You pay once at purchase for the full validity period you choose — no monthly SIM fees, no recharges, no contracts and no auto-renewals. Any tracking platform or app fees are set by your tracker provider.

When does the plan start?

On the date of the SIM's first successful network connection — not the date of purchase or shipping. You can buy now and store the SIM until you're ready to use it.

Which mobile network does this SIM use — Telstra or Optus?

Both. The SIM has access to Telstra and Optus 4G networks. The network used at a given location depends on network availability, coverage and device behaviour.

Does this SIM support calls or SMS?

No. It is a data-only SIM. If your tracker needs SMS for first-time setup, configure it with a regular SMS-capable SIM first, provided the tracker keeps those settings and doesn't rely on SMS or voice in normal operation.

Where does the SIM card ship from?
