Victron GX LTE SIM — quick compatibility summary

This SIM works with Victron GX systems when used with the official GX LTE 4G modem. It provides 4G LTE data connectivity for remote monitoring through the Victron VRM Portal. It uses the Telstra and Optus 4G networks, is data-only (no voice or SMS), and does not support LTE-M or NB-IoT devices such as the GlobalLink 520/530. You pay once for 1–8 years, with no monthly fees.

Why a multi-year SIM matters for Victron remote monitoring

Remote Victron systems typically transmit only small amounts of data. Because of this low usage, standard Telstra, Optus and Vodafone prepaid SIMs — which expire after 28 to 180 days of inactivity — can lapse long before the monitoring system itself stops working. The result is a GX system that quietly goes offline while the hardware is still running.

A purpose-built multi-year data SIM removes the recharge cycle entirely, keeping the GX LTE modem connected for up to 8 years on a single upfront payment — the connection model that suits long-term, low-data remote monitoring.

Which Victron devices does this SIM work with?

This SIM connects your Victron GX system to the internet through the official GX LTE 4G modem. The SIM goes into the modem — not directly into the GX device.

Why doesn't this SIM work with GlobalLink 520 / 530?

It's not a brand restriction — it's a radio technology difference.

The Victron GlobalLink 520 and 530 are built for LTE-M and NB-IoT — low-power, low-bandwidth cellular categories designed for tiny sensors that send small bursts of data. This SIM provides standard 4G LTE data, which is what the GX LTE 4G modem uses.

Because LTE-M / NB-IoT and standard 4G LTE are different network technologies, a 4G LTE data SIM cannot connect a GlobalLink device. If your Victron system uses a GX device with the GX LTE 4G modem, this SIM is correct. If it uses a GlobalLink 520/530, you need an LTE-M / NB-IoT SIM instead.

APN settings for your Victron GX LTE modem

If your GX LTE modem cannot connect after inserting the SIM, the most common cause is the APN. Set it to:

Setting Value
APN mobile (lowercase)
Username (leave blank)
Password (leave blank)

Enter the APN in the GX LTE modem's connection settings via your GX device. Why the APN matters: if it's incorrect, the GX LTE modem may register on the mobile network but fail to establish a data session — so the modem appears connected while the GX system stays offline. If the system still won't come online after setting the APN to mobile, contact us — we'll work through it with you.

Which data plan should I choose?

Data usage depends on your system configuration and update frequency. Use this as a guide:

Your installation Recommended plan Data
Most Victron GX systems Standard 100MB/month
More frequent updates Plus 200MB/month
High-frequency monitoring / remote access Pro 500MB/month
Multiple systems / heavy remote access Ultra 1GB/month

All plans are available with 1, 3, 5 or 8 year validity.

What's included

  • 1 × 4G LTE Victron GX SIM card
  • 1 × SIM ejector pin
  • Triple-cut SIM (fits Standard, Micro and Nano slots — no separate adapter)
  • Setup instructions
  • Free shipping Australia-wide

How it works

  1. Choose your data plan (Standard, Plus, Pro or Ultra) and validity (1, 3, 5 or 8 years)
  2. Your SIM ships from Melbourne with free Australia-wide delivery
  3. Insert it into your Victron GX LTE 4G modem, set the APN to mobile — the GX system comes online through the modem

Network coverage in Australia

This SIM gives your GX LTE modem access to both Telstra and Optus 4G networks — Australia's two largest carriers. Your device has access to both networks; network selection may vary depending on coverage and device behaviour at its location.

Combined Telstra + Optus coverage includes all capital cities and major regional towns, most rural Australia and inland highways, coastal areas, and standard farm, property and off-grid solar locations within cellular range. For deep outback or off-grid sites beyond any cellular range, satellite connectivity is the only option.

Important things to know before ordering

  • ⚠️ Requires the GX LTE 4G modem. This SIM is inserted into the official Victron GX LTE 4G modem, not directly into the GX device.
  • ⚠️ Data-only. This SIM does not support voice calls or SMS. It provides internet connectivity for the GX system only.
  • ⚠️ 4G LTE only. Not compatible with LTE-M / NB-IoT devices (GlobalLink 520/530) or 2G/3G GX GSM units.
  • ⚠️ Validity starts when you insert the SIM, not when you order. Your plan begins the day the SIM first connects through your GX LTE modem — not the day of purchase. You can buy now and store the SIM until your installation is ready. Plans are extendable — contact support before expiry to renew.

FAQ

Does the Cerbo GX (or other GX device) have a SIM slot?

No — GX devices don't take a SIM directly. The SIM goes into the official Victron GX LTE 4G modem, which connects to your GX device and provides its internet connection.

Where do I insert the SIM?

Into the Victron GX LTE 4G modem, not the GX device itself. The modem provides internet connectivity to the GX system.

Why is my Victron GX offline after inserting the SIM?

The most common cause is the APN. Set it to mobile (lowercase, username and password blank) in the GX LTE modem's connection settings. Also confirm the SIM is seated correctly and you're within Telstra or Optus 4G coverage. Still offline? Contact us and we'll work through it with you.

Do I need to enable data roaming?

No. This SIM operates on Australian networks (Telstra and Optus 4G) and does not require data roaming for use within Australia.

Can I just use a regular Telstra or Optus prepaid SIM instead?

You can, but standard prepaid SIMs expire after 28–180 days of inactivity — which is exactly why remote GX installations go offline. This SIM is built for long-term, low-data, set-and-forget use, with validity up to 8 years on one payment and no recharge cycles.

Why doesn't it work with GlobalLink 520 / 530?

Those devices use LTE-M / NB-IoT, a different cellular technology from the standard 4G LTE (Cat-4) data this SIM provides. It's a radio technology difference, not a brand restriction. GlobalLink devices need an LTE-M / NB-IoT SIM instead.

Is there a monthly fee or recurring charge?

No. You pay once at purchase for the full validity period you choose (1 to 8 years). No monthly fees, no recharges, no contracts and no auto-renewals.

Which mobile network does this SIM use — Telstra or Optus?

Both. This SIM has access to Telstra and Optus 4G networks. Network selection may vary depending on coverage and device behaviour at the installation's location. Both Telstra and Optus are tier-1 Australian carriers.

How long does the SIM stay active?

Your choice — 1, 3, 5 or 8 years from activation. Validity counts down from the day the SIM first connects through your GX LTE modem — not from the day of purchase or shipping.
