Why a multi-year SIM matters for a gateway site

Standard consumer prepaid SIMs are built around recurring recharge cycles — when recharges stop, the service eventually lapses. A gateway is exactly the kind of device that gets forgotten: it's mounted in a shed or cabinet, it works silently, and nobody thinks about its SIM until the data stops arriving. The recharge cycle creates a recurring operational failure point.

Dual-SIM gateways: the backup slot

Many gateways have two SIM slots and switch to the second SIM if the first connection drops. A long-validity SIM can be useful in that backup slot because it removes the need for recurring recharge on a connection that may rarely be used. Exact failover behaviour and any SIM-activity requirements depend on the gateway configuration and mobile service — backup usage draws from the plan's monthly allowance when active.

Note: validity starts from the SIM's first network connection. On gateways with SIM idle-protection or periodic failover checks, that first connection may occur during setup or testing rather than during an actual outage.

Setup and APN

APN: mobile — username and password blank. You'll find the APN setting in the gateway's web interface under the mobile, cellular or WAN section. Save and reboot the cellular connection. If the gateway shows signal but no data, check the APN was applied to the slot the SIM is in.

How much data does a 4G gateway use?

It depends on what's connected behind it, not on the gateway itself. A single sensor reporting on interval sits at the low end; more devices, remote logins and photo uploads add more. Which gateways and routers work with this SIM?

Gateways and cellular routers that support standard 4G LTE on Australian networks, take a physical BYO SIM and let you set the APN. This service is intended for standard 4G LTE and is not suitable for devices that only support LTE-M (Cat-M1) or NB-IoT.

Can I use this SIM in a dual-SIM gateway?

Yes, in either slot — as the main connection or as the backup. Each slot needs its own SIM. Note the validity point above if you're planning it as a backup.

Does this SIM support SMS?

It's designed for data connectivity. If your gateway depends on SMS for alerts or configuration, message us before ordering so we can confirm your setup.

When does the validity period start?

From the SIM's first network connection, not from purchase — you can order ahead of an installation without losing time.

What happens if I use all my monthly data?

Data access pauses until the next monthly allowance becomes available — there are no excess usage charges. Depending on the gateway, a reconnect or session refresh may be needed once the new cycle starts. If you hit the cap in normal use, measure real usage and move up a tier at the next purchase.

What happens when the validity period ends?

If renewal on the existing SIM is available for your plan, place a new order and include your SIM ID in the checkout notes — the service can then be extended without replacing the physical card.

Can I use it for internet at the house or office?

No — these plans top out at 2GB per month, sized for equipment data. A mobile broadband plan is the right product for general internet use.
