Product description

Keep your solar monitoring online for up to 8 years — without a monthly SIM bill.

A long-validity 4G data SIM for solar inverter 4G dongles, battery monitoring modules and communication hardware that accept a user-supplied physical SIM. One payment up front. No monthly SIM fees. No recharge cycles. Built for the way solar monitoring actually works: tiny data, always on, installed once and left alone for years.

  • Pay once, use for 1, 3, 5 or 8 years — no monthly fees, no auto-renewals
  • For BYO-SIM modules — 4G dongles and communication modules with a physical SIM slot and configurable APN
  • Triple-cut SIM — Standard, Micro and Nano — no separate adapter
  • Telstra + Optus 4G access — network selection depends on local coverage and the module’s supported carrier behaviour
  • Data-only — monitoring uploads need data, not calls or SMS
  • Long validity — no recharge deadlines to manage for a module on a roof or in a shed

Quick answer: most home solar systems upload monitoring data over Wi-Fi or Ethernet — but where Wi-Fi is unavailable or unreliable, many inverter and battery brands offer a 4G dongle or communication module. If that module accepts a user-supplied physical SIM and allows APN configuration, this SIM provides the 4G data connection (Telstra + Optus access, Australia) on a one-time payment lasting 1 to 8 years.

Will it work with my inverter or battery system?

The inverter brand alone doesn’t decide compatibility — the 4G communication module does. Check this first:

✅ Suitable if your setup has:

  • A 4G LTE dongle or communication module with a physical SIM slot (Standard, Micro or Nano)
  • Support for a user-supplied (BYO) SIM with configurable APN
  • Data-only operation (no SMS or voice needed)
  • Monitoring data use of no more than 1GB per month (solar monitoring is typically far below this)

❌ May not be suitable if:

  • Your system uploads over Wi-Fi or Ethernet only — no cellular module fitted (a SIM has nowhere to go)
  • The module uses a non-removable eSIM or manufacturer-managed connectivity bundled with a subscription
  • The module’s documentation restricts which SIMs or carriers its 4G features support — some do; check yours or ask us before ordering
  • APN settings can only be changed with installer-level access you don’t have
  • The module is 2G or 3G only, or LTE-M-only / NB-IoT-only

Not sure? Contact us with the inverter brand, inverter model and the communication module (dongle) model — we’ll check compatibility for free before you order.

Brands and module types to check

Compatibility is decided by the communication module, not the inverter brand alone. The brands below have documented or commonly observed 4G monitoring paths where a BYO SIM may apply in selected setups. Listed does not mean guaranteed compatible — confirm the exact module before ordering:

  • SolarEdge cellular plug-ins — selected plug-ins support a non-SolarEdge SIM and APN configuration.
  • Solis 4G Wi-Fi + cellular sticks — current 4G models may support a user-supplied SIM, depending on version.
  • Sungrow 4G communication dongles — worth checking where the bundled network coverage is insufficient and a different carrier’s SIM may be required.
  • GoodWe 4G kits and modules — APN customisation is documented; confirm whether your kit is BYO-SIM or pre-installed-SIM.
  • Sigenergy communication modules — check whether the fitted 4G module accepts a user-supplied SIM for monitoring upload.

Not listed? Send us the inverter brand, inverter model and communication module model before ordering — we can help check whether a BYO-SIM setup is realistic. For brand-by-brand detail, see the solar inverter SIM guide.

For solar installers and multi-site projects

If you install 4G communication modules across multiple solar, battery or shed systems, a long-validity SIM can reduce ongoing connectivity admin after handover.

  • No monthly billing to manage per customer site
  • 1, 3, 5 or 8 year validity options
  • Same APN across compatible devices: mobile
  • Suitable for low-data monitoring modules where BYO SIM is supported
  • Volume pricing available for multi-SIM orders

Send us the module models and estimated quantity before ordering — we can help check compatibility and recommend a plan mix.

Why solar monitoring suits a pay-once, multi-year SIM

A solar or battery system stays on the roof for 10–25 years, and its monitoring module is configured once — often by an installer — then left alone. Consumer prepaid services depend on recharge and service-expiry rules designed for phone users, not unattended devices: miss a recharge deadline and the monitoring quietly goes offline, often unnoticed until you wonder why the app stopped updating months ago. And solar monitoring sips data — a recurring monthly fee is the real cost, not the data. This SIM replaces that recurring management with a single upfront validity of 1, 3, 5 or 8 years. When comparing options, weigh total cost across the life of the system, not the monthly headline.

Choose your plan

Solar and battery monitoring is genuinely low-data — uploads are small status and production readings, not video:

Plan Typical fit
100MB Single inverter or simple battery monitoring where the module’s own documentation indicates low monthly usage
200MB Hybrid/battery systems with more frequent reporting, or added margin — a common starting point
500MB Multiple devices behind one connection, or high-frequency commercial reporting
1GB Site gateways and heavier commercial telemetry (product ceiling)

This is guidance, not a measured average — check your module’s documentation for its own data estimate, or send us the model.

Validity

Choose 1, 3, 5 or 8 years. Validity begins the day the SIM first connects — not at purchase or shipping — so an installer can order ahead and fit the SIM at commissioning. Plans are extendable; contact support before expiry.

What’s included

  • 1 × 4G LTE data SIM card
  • 1 × SIM ejector pin
  • Triple-cut SIM — fits Standard, Micro and Nano slots, no separate adapter
  • Setup instructions
  • Free shipping Australia-wide

How it works

  1. Check compatibility — the 6-point check below, or ask us with your models.
  2. Choose your plan — data (100MB–1GB) × validity (1/3/5/8 years).
  3. We ship from Melbourne — free Australia-wide delivery.
  4. Insert the SIM into the communication module’s SIM slot.
  5. Set the APN — the APN for this Lemon Mobile SIM is mobile (username and password blank), entered in the module or its configuration app per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. Allow a few minutes for first network registration, then confirm data upload in your monitoring app or portal — first connection is also when validity starts.

Network access in Australia

This SIM has access to both Telstra and Optus 4G rather than being tied to one carrier’s footprint — useful for rural properties, sheds and sites where a single network’s coverage is marginal. Network selection depends on local coverage and the module’s supported carrier behaviour. Beyond terrestrial mobile coverage, a cellular SIM cannot connect; satellite-based connectivity may be required for truly off-grid sites.

Important compatibility notes

⚠️ The module decides, not the inverter brand. The same brand can ship Wi-Fi-only, eSIM-managed and BYO-SIM module variants. Compatibility is determined by the exact communication module fitted to your system.

⚠️ Data-only — no voice or SMS. Solar monitoring modules communicate over mobile data; if a module requires SMS for its operation or setup, this SIM isn’t suitable.

⚠️ 4G LTE required. Australia’s 3G networks have closed — TPG/Vodafone in January 2024, Telstra and Optus by November 2024. A 2G/3G-only module can’t be revived by any SIM.

⚠️ Some modules restrict SIMs, roaming or carriers. A number of solar ecosystems mention designated connectivity, carrier conditions, roaming behaviour or bundled SIM arrangements in their documentation. If your module’s manual mentions SIM or carrier requirements, check with the manufacturer or with us before ordering.

Need help connecting? The APN for this SIM is mobile (username/password blank). For connection paths, brand notes and troubleshooting, see the solar inverter SIM guide — or contact us and we’ll work through it with you.

FAQ

Does my solar inverter need a SIM card?

Usually not — most home systems upload over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A SIM only applies where a 4G dongle or communication module is fitted (or being added) because Wi-Fi is unavailable or unreliable. If that module takes a user-supplied SIM, this product provides the data connection.

Will this work with my Sungrow / GoodWe / Solis / Sigenergy / SolarEdge system?

Potentially — these brands have documented or commonly observed 4G module paths where a user-supplied SIM may apply. But compatibility depends on the exact module model and configuration, and some ecosystems set carrier or SIM conditions. Send us the inverter model and the communication module model and we’ll check for free.

My original cellular plan expired — can I replace it with this SIM?

Often, yes — if the module accepts a user-supplied physical SIM. Replace the SIM, set APN to mobile, and confirm upload resumes in your portal. If the module is locked to managed connectivity, a replacement SIM won’t work — check the module’s documentation or ask us.

How much data does solar monitoring use?

Very little — uploads are small readings, not video. Actual use depends on the module and reporting frequency; check your module’s documentation. 100MB is usually the starting point for simple low-data monitoring where the module documentation indicates low usage; 200MB gives more margin for hybrid/battery systems.

Can installers buy SIMs ahead of installation?

Yes. Validity only starts when the SIM first connects, so you can order ahead and fit SIMs at commissioning. Volume pricing is available for multi-SIM orders — send us the module models and quantity.

Is there a monthly fee?

No. One payment for your chosen data allowance and validity period — no monthly fees, no recharges, no auto-renewals. When validity ends, renew by placing a new order with your SIM details, or contact support before expiry.

What APN does this SIM use?

The APN for this Lemon Mobile SIM is mobile (lowercase), username and password blank — entered in the module’s settings or configuration app per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Before you order — the 6-point check

  1. Is a 4G LTE communication module fitted (or being added) to your system?
  2. Does it have a physical SIM slot?
  3. Does it accept a user-supplied SIM?
  4. Can the APN be configured without SMS commands — for example through an app, local portal or installer tool?
  5. Can it run data-only (no SMS or voice needed)?
  6. Does the manual avoid restricting the module to a specific carrier, bundled SIM or managed connectivity plan?

All six yes → you’ve passed the main compatibility checks. If the module mentions approved carriers, bundled SIMs or installer-only connectivity, confirm first — or contact us with the exact models and we’ll check for you.
